Proposal for Educational Consultation

submitted to David Erickson

by Kellyx Nelson and Jack Laws

We offer to consult with the Muwekma Ohlone Sanctuary to develop a plan for integrating the natural area into the community. To develop this plan, we will conduct a biological inventory of the natural area, assess the relevant needs of local schools, and research potential partnerships with other organizations. Based on these findings, we will propose appropriate educational programming and possible next steps.

Phase One: Biological Inventory

Through repeated visits, we will identify and list organisms found from the upland area to the low tide zone and birds in the general vicinity. There will be an initial thorough inventory and a minimum of three follow-up visits.

Phase Two: Community Needs Assessment

We will conduct formal and informal conversations with local school administrators and teachers regarding curricular needs and potential educational uses of the area, including natural and cultural history.

Phase Three: Community Resource Assessment

We will conduct a variety of formal and informal conversations with community organizations, local industry, and individuals active in District 10 as potential community resources and partners in the project.

Phase Four: Concluding Report and Recommendations

Using the information obtained from biological inventories, assessed community needs and resources, as well as our external perspective and combined experiences, we will submit a final report which identifies a plan to integrate the Muwekma Ohlone Sanctuary into the local community. This plan will include proposed educational and community-building programs and recommended next steps.

Consultant capabilities

Kellyx Nelson has spent the last 12 years developing, managing, and consulting for educational programming with particular focus on urban environmental education. The diverse nature of these experiences, in classrooms and after-school programs, in schools, museums, churches and outdoors, in enrichment programs as well as work-based youth development programs, gives her a broad perspective on the range of issues and possibilities for connecting urban communities to the natural world.

A wildlife biologist and environmental educator for over 15 years, Jack Laws has experience with both biological inventory and monitoring in urban as well as wild areas.

As an employee and consultant for school districts and non-profit environmental education organizations, he has particular strengths in curriculum development and implementation. He is well-known as a gifted teacher by students of all ages and levels of knowledge.

Together, the extensive experience Jack and Kellyx have developing and managing educational programs, as well as the leadership roles they have played consulting and mentoring in the field internationally, nationally, and regionally demonstrate both a passion and an aptitude for this type of work as well as knowledge of numerous resources and contacts within the field.
